Is ChatGPT Safe? Privacy and Security Guide for New Users

0

If you’re new to AI, you probably have concerns about privacy and safety. These are legitimate concerns. Here’s what you need to know.

Your data and privacy:
– By default, OpenAI may use your conversations to train future models
– You can opt out: Settings โ†’ Data Controls โ†’ toggle off “Improve the model for everyone”
– Temporary Chats don’t save history and aren’t used for training
– Enterprise and Team accounts have stronger data protections

What NOT to share with ChatGPT:
– Passwords, API keys, or authentication tokens
– Social security numbers or financial account details
– Confidential business information (unless you have Enterprise)
– Personal medical records
– Private information about other people

Safety tips:
– Don’t trust ChatGPT for medical, legal, or financial advice without verification
– Always fact-check important claims (it can sound confident while being wrong)
– Don’t use it to make consequential decisions without human review
– Be careful with plugins/GPTs from unknown creators

The good news: For typical everyday use (writing help, brainstorming, learning, coding), ChatGPT is very safe. Just use common sense about what personal information you share, like you would with any online service.

worth adding that if you're in the EU, GDPR gives you stronger rights around your data than users elsewhere. you can request deletion of your data directly through OpenAI's privacy portal.

one thing i'd push back on slightly - the "don't use for medical advice" warning is right but people treat it like a hard line. using it to understand a diagnosis your doctor already gave you is totally reasonable.

yeah exactly. there's a difference between replacing a doctor and just going in better informed. i use it to prep questions before appointments all the time.

does the opt-out setting persist if you clear your browser cache or reinstall the app? asking because i feel like i've had to toggle it back on before and wasn't sure why.

the plugins/GPTs point is underrated. i've seen some third-party GPTs that ask for way more permissions than they need. always check what a GPT is allowed to access before using it.
